Take a Look around Residential Islington, N1
The district of Islington is located in the London Borough of Islington, Greater London. It makes a residential part of London in the N1 postcode area, which encompasses Essex Road, Upper Street and the eastern areas around Southgate Road.
Historically, the area grew around a small village in Middlesex that was situated along the Great North Road. The village gave the name to the present day borough. Presently, the area is bounded by Southgate Road and City Road (south-east) and Liverpool Road (west).
Islington stands on a hill that has supplied London with water in the past. Clerkenwell, Sadler’s Wells and London Spa are some of the first projects that drew water from wooden pipes. Regent’s Canal passes through a tunnel in the area – from Colebrook Row to Muriel Street. The canal was opened in 1820.
Islington High Street is at the heart of the area. It spans some 500 metres from Pentonville Road to Islington Green. Unlike other areas of the capital, the village church – St Mary’s - is not located on the High Street, but on Upper Street.
