A Quick Walkthrough of Camden, NW1

Camden is a major centre, as identified in the London Plan, and an inner city district of the capital of London. It is situated just 3.9 kilometres north of the city centre and served by the NW1 postcode. North of the area are the Highgate and Hampstead hills. The north part of the area is where the Regent’s Canal runs through.

The London Borough of Camden is popular for its markets. The majority of them date from 1970 and later, except for Inverness Street market, which has stood for over a century. Camden Lock market originated from a timber-yard somewhere around 1973. Presently, it is surrounded by Stables market, Buck Street market, Camden Lock village and indoor Electric Ballroom.

The Camden Catacombs represents an underground passage system under the Camden markets. The area was used as stables for the animals involved in railway work, and didn’t serve the purpose of real catacombs.

One of the popular local landmarks is the Roundhouse Theatre. This is a locomotive engine roundhouse that was initially constructed in 1847 to be used for the London & North Western Railway. It served various purposes, till it was opened as a theatre in 1966, closed later and again re-opened in 2006.
